Advice for teaching someone to fish

Teaching a friend or family member how to fish can be a highly rewarding experience! It means that you will be passing on your own valuable skills and experience and also you will have someone to share this enjoyable hobby with. However it can be hard knowing some of the best ways to teach someone to fish which is why at Taskers Angling we thought we would put together this blog to help you.

First of all there should be a big emphasis on making the whole experience fun and interesting, this is particularly important if you are teaching children or young people to fish as they are unlikely to have the same attention span as an adult. Even if you are teaching an older person then still try and make it fun as that is what it should be anyway at the end of the day! There is a lot of information that comes with fishing and keeping sessions short means they are more likely to lremember it all.

Now location. Staying close to home is always best to start with a beginner. One of the main reasons for this is because it is accessible to them if they choose to try it on their own. Saving the long drives or boat trips for a later date will you give them something to look forward to.

Along with staying close to home sticking to the basics is also highly recommended. Don't overcomplicate things too early and instead nail all the basic skills needed so that the person you are teaching has a good solid understanding.

Making sure you provide plenty of encouragement as well is very important. Experienced anglers will know that fishing can be a frustrating sport to be involved in, particularly when you are going long periods of time without getting a catch. Providing good support and encouragement when this is the case should help to keep whoever you are teaching focused and upbeat when things aren't going their way.

Finally setting a good example of how to best treat the environment is something you should definitely do. Cleaning up after you and treating the environment with respect are basic steps that you can take which set a good example. This not only keeps the area nice for yourself and other anglers but other wildlife and fish that live there. For more information see our page on Limiting pollution while angling
